Koji vs HubSpot: AI Research Interviews vs CRM Surveys (2026)

The bottom line: HubSpot's customer feedback tools are a convenience feature built for CRM users who want basic satisfaction scores. Koji is a purpose-built AI research platform that tells you why customers feel the way they do. Here's the full comparison.

The Real Question: What Do You Actually Need to Know?

HubSpot processes millions of customer interactions daily. Its survey features are designed to help customer success teams close the loop on support tickets — "Was your issue resolved? Rate us 1–5." That's useful. But it's not research.

Research answers different questions: Why are customers churning? What would make them upgrade? What's blocking product adoption? What do they wish your product did?

These questions can't be answered with a CSAT survey. They need conversations.

What HubSpot's Customer Feedback Tools Actually Do

HubSpot's feedback capabilities live inside Service Hub, starting at $90/seat/month (Professional tier) plus a mandatory $1,500 onboarding fee.

The three survey types available:

  • NPS — Net Promoter Score: "How likely are you to recommend us to a friend?" (0–10 scale)
  • CSAT — Customer Satisfaction: "How satisfied are you with [interaction]?" (1–5 scale)
  • CES — Customer Effort Score: "How easy was it to resolve your issue?" (1–7 scale)

These are measurement tools, not research tools. They produce scores you can track over time — but they don't explain the reasoning behind those scores.

HubSpot Survey Limitations Worth Knowing

No adaptive questioning. HubSpot surveys follow a fixed path. A customer who gives you a 3/10 NPS sees the same follow-up as someone who gives you a 9/10. Real research adapts — it asks "what specifically frustrated you?" when someone is unhappy and "what's the primary reason you'd recommend us?" when they're delighted.

No AI moderation. HubSpot has no AI that conducts interviews, probes deeper, or synthesizes qualitative responses across respondents. Open-text answers are left raw for your team to manually analyze.

No voice research. All HubSpot surveys are text-based. Voice interviews, which capture tone, hesitation, and richer responses, aren't supported.

Once published, questions are locked. You cannot edit or delete questions after a survey is published — a significant constraint for teams iterating on their research approach.

Doesn't work well on single-page apps. HubSpot feedback surveys have known issues with modern SPAs built on React, Vue, or Angular, where page HTML isn't reloaded between views.

Requires Service Hub Professional. Basic contact forms are free, but the NPS, CSAT, and CES surveys require Professional ($90/seat/mo) or Enterprise ($150/seat/mo with a 10-seat minimum and $3,500 onboarding fee). A 5-person team paying for Service Hub Professional just to run NPS surveys is looking at $450–$900/month.

What Koji Does Differently

Koji is built for one purpose: helping teams understand customers deeply, quickly, and without needing trained research staff.

AI-Moderated Interviews That Actually Listen

Koji's AI conducts full qualitative interviews — asking your questions, listening to responses, and probing deeper based on what participants say. If a customer mentions a specific pain point, Koji asks a follow-up. If they seem uncertain, Koji asks them to clarify. This is the core of what makes qualitative research valuable, and it's what no survey tool — including HubSpot — can replicate.

Voice + Text Modalities

Participants can respond via voice (Koji uses natural-sounding AI voice synthesis) or via text chat. Voice interviews capture richer, more natural responses. Text interviews are frictionless for async participation. Both generate transcripts that feed into Koji's analysis engine.

6 Structured Question Types

Koji supports both qualitative and quantitative question types in one platform:

  1. Open-ended — thematic summary + quotes in reports, with 1–3 levels of AI follow-up probing
  2. Scale — NPS, CSAT, satisfaction ratings with distribution charts
  3. Single choice — categorical responses with frequency bar charts
  4. Multiple choice — multi-select with stacked frequency charts
  5. Ranking — preference ordering with average position scores
  6. Yes/No — binary questions with pie/donut visualization

This means Koji can run the same NPS and CSAT measurements as HubSpot — plus the qualitative interviews that explain the scores.

Automatic Thematic Analysis

After interviews complete, Koji analyzes all responses and automatically surfaces themes, patterns, and representative quotes. What used to take a research team days of manual coding happens in minutes.

One-Click Reports

Koji generates shareable research reports with theme summaries, verbatim quotes, and aggregated quantitative data. Reports can be published publicly or shared as a link — no additional formatting work required.

Koji Pricing

  • Free — 10 starter credits to try the platform
  • Insights — €29/month (29 credits, up to 5 active studies, CSV export, theme detection, report generation)
  • Interviews — €79/month (79 credits, unlimited studies, voice interviews, API access, webhooks, CRM import)

Real Research HubSpot Cannot Run

Here's what Koji customers actually use the platform for — none of which is possible with HubSpot:

Churn interviews. When customers cancel, HubSpot might capture a cancellation reason from a dropdown. Koji runs a 15-minute AI-moderated exit interview that uncovers the real reason — the friction, the moment of disappointment, the feature they needed that wasn't there.

Product discovery. Before building a new feature, product teams use Koji to interview 20 potential users asynchronously over 48 hours. The AI probes their workflows, frustrations, and mental models — and surfaces the themes in a report before the sprint planning session.

Win/loss research. Koji interviews prospects who chose you and prospects who didn't. The AI asks the same structured questions to both groups, and the thematic analysis shows you exactly why deals were won or lost — without any manual work.

NPS follow-up depth. Run your NPS in HubSpot, then use Koji to automatically interview your Detractors (0–6) for qualitative context. The combination of measurement and explanation is powerful.

The 2026 Research Landscape

The demand for customer insights is at an all-time high. In 2026, 66% of research teams report higher demand for insights, and 69% are using AI in at least some of their studies. The share of organizations where research is essential to all levels of strategy nearly tripled — from 8% in 2025 to 22% in 2026.

Most critically: teams that integrate user research into product decisions see 2.7x better outcomes, including higher revenue growth and improved customer retention.

HubSpot's NPS survey tells you your score dropped. Koji tells you your score dropped because customers are overwhelmed by onboarding — and here are the six specific moments where they got confused, in their own words. That's a fundamentally different category of insight.

When HubSpot Surveys Are the Right Call

HubSpot surveys make sense when:

  • You're already paying for Service Hub Professional and want to add quick satisfaction checks without a new tool
  • You need NPS/CSAT scores tied to your CRM contacts and deal records
  • You're measuring support ticket resolution quality
  • You only need trend tracking over time, not qualitative depth

When You Need Koji Instead

Choose Koji when:

  • You need to understand the why behind customer behavior, not just their satisfaction score
  • You're running product discovery, churn analysis, win/loss, or concept testing research
  • You want qualitative depth without training or hiring moderators
  • You need voice research for more natural, candid conversations
  • You want automatic analysis and reports that stakeholders can actually act on
  • You're a startup or small team that needs research-grade insights at startup-friendly prices
