Process
Formative evaluation stages for new teaching materials
Test a draft with a few students before the whole cohort uses it

A four-stage process for testing new teaching materials with students before a full cohort uses them: expert review, one-to-one trials, a small-group trial and a field trial. It is for module leaders and academic developers redesigning a unit, workbook or online module. Revise after each stage. Koji can run the small-group and field-trial rounds as AI interviews with the draft pages attached to the questions.
What's in this process
- Expert review: A colleague and a learning designer check accuracy and spot what students will misread.
- One-to-one trials: Three to five students work through a section thinking aloud. Revise after every two or three.
- Small-group trial: Eight to twenty students use the revised unit on their own. Time it and note what they skip.
- Field trial: Launch to the full cohort and check in after two weeks, not at the end of term.
