Checklist
Checklist for designing a teaching award
Based on Chism's study of what 144 university teaching awards actually reward

A checklist for designing or reviewing a university teaching award, based on Nancy Chism's 2006 study of 144 awards at 85 institutions, which found many had no stated criteria, no link between evidence and criteria, and no standards. For award committees, educational developers and quality offices. Koji can gather student input against each criterion, with the reasons behind each rating.
What's in this checklist
- Write down what the award is for, in terms a nominee can act on
- Match each piece of evidence to a named criterion
- State the standard the committee will use to judge evidence
- Ask for teaching materials and examples of student work
- Add peer review, not only letters and testimony
- Collect student input against the criteria, with reasons
- Treat the award as one part of teaching evaluation
