Framework
The four core tree testing metrics

The four numbers to read in any tree test: success rate, directness (success without backtracking), first-click accuracy and time on task. Together they show whether people can find content and where a label or category sends them the wrong way. Read them per task, then look at the paths behind any low score. Koji follow-up interviews add the reason behind each wrong turn.
Where this appears
What's in this framework
- Success rate: The share who found the right answer. Your headline number.
- Directness: Did they get there without backtracking? Lots of indirect success points to unclear labels.
- First-click accuracy: Where they clicked first. A wrong first click predicts failure.
- Time on task: Even a success can hide friction if it takes far longer than expected.
