Checklist
What to write in an analytic memo: a checklist
Seven prompts for starting a memo when the page is blank

Seven prompts for writing analytic memos during qualitative research, for when you know you should write one but don't know where to start. Answering two or three honestly is enough for a useful memo. They work after an interview, during coding and before synthesis. When interviews run in Koji, each interview's analysis and quotes give you material to answer them quickly.

What's in this checklist
- What surprised me in this interview or this batch?
- What does this code actually mean, and what doesn't belong in it?
- Which participants does this apply to, and who is the exception?
- How does this connect to something I saw earlier?
- What did I expect to hear, and did I hear it because it was there?
- What would prove my current idea wrong?
- What should I ask or look for next?
