Course evaluation privacy statement checklist
Eight checks for a confidentiality promise that is short, specific and true
A checklist for the privacy or confidentiality statement at the top of a course evaluation. It follows Singer, von Thurn and Miller's (1995) meta-analysis, which found confidentiality assurances help modestly when questions are sensitive and do little otherwise, and later work showing that elaborate assurances can raise suspicion. QA officers can use it before each evaluation cycle. Koji lets evaluation owners switch off or reword its Anonymous badge and never shows it on personal invite links.
What's in this checklist
- Say who will see individual comments and who sees only summaries
- Say when results are released, for example after grades are final
- Call it anonymous only if no one can link answers to a student
- Use confidential when answers are linked but protected
- Keep the statement short on routine teaching questions
- Add specific protection where questions are sensitive
- Explain how small classes are protected in reports
- Check the statement is true before every cycle
