Checklist
Doctoral graduate career outcomes review checklist
Eight checks for following PhD graduates into the careers they actually have

A checklist for graduate schools and doctoral programme leads who want to evaluate their programme against the careers graduates actually have, most of them outside universities. It covers tracking cohorts over several years, separating leaving academia from leaving research, asking which skills transferred, and reporting who did not respond. Koji can run the graduate interviews behind it, with personal invite links and thematic analysis of the answers.
What's in this checklist
- Track each cohort at about one, three and five years after graduation
- Record the sector as well as the job title
- Separate leaving academia from leaving research
- Ask which doctoral skills graduates use at work
- Ask what they had to learn on the job that the programme could have taught
- Compare career aims at entry with where graduates end up
- Report response rates and who is missing, by cohort and discipline
- Feed findings into training and supervisor guidance
