Flipped classrooms: learning vs satisfaction

A side by side view of four meta-analyses of flipped classrooms and what each found for learning outcomes and for student satisfaction. It is meant for quality assurance staff and programme boards who review a flipped module on its course evaluation. The pattern is that learning gains are modest and satisfaction gains smaller or absent, so ratings alone tend to undersell a flip. Koji can add questions about pre-class work and contact time to the evaluation.
What's in this reference table
| Meta-analysis | Scope | Learning | Satisfaction |
|---|---|---|---|
| van Alten et al. 2019 | 114 studies, mostly higher education | Small positive effect | No effect overall |
| Låg and Sæle 2019 | 272 learning effect sizes | g = 0.35, or 0.24 in well powered studies | g = 0.16, likely inflated by publication bias |
| Cheng et al. 2019 | Learning outcomes only | g = 0.19 | Not analysed |
| Bredow et al. 2021 | 317 studies, higher education | Ahead on 7 of 8 outcomes, g = 0.20 to 0.53 | One of those 8 outcomes |
