Lecture recording policy evaluation checklist

What to measure before deciding how to record lectures

Checklist for evaluating a lecture recording policy, from measuring attendance and viewing separately to asking students why they watch and comparing cohorts.

A nine-point checklist for evaluating lecture capture or lecture recording policy in a university module. It is for programme teams and quality committees deciding whether to record everything, nudge attendance or release recordings with a delay. It separates attendance from viewing, asks students why they watch, and treats subgroups and marks data with care. Koji interviews can collect the reasons that logs and attendance records cannot show.

What's in this checklist

  • Record attendance and recording views as separate measures
  • Use viewing logs instead of asking students to recall how much they watched
  • Ask whether students watch after attending, instead of attending, or both
  • Ask why: illness, work, caring, travel, language, revision or choice
  • Run a short check-in mid-term, not only at the end
  • Look at first-year, working and second-language students separately
  • Report subgroups only where numbers protect anonymity
  • Link viewing and attendance to marks only with a clear lawful basis
  • Compare cohorts and note other changes made at the same time
