Checklist
Accounting for prior subject interest in course evaluations
Six checks before comparing ratings across required and elective courses

A checklist for reading student evaluations of teaching fairly when courses differ in how much students wanted to take them. Prior subject interest is a consistent, modest influence on ratings, so heads of department and promotion committees can use these checks before comparing compulsory and elective courses. Koji lets you ask about starting interest in the same session as the course feedback.
What's in this checklist
- Ask how interested students were at the start of term
- Report starting interest next to the ratings
- Compare compulsory courses with other compulsory courses
- Look at change in interest, not only the final rating
- Never use a single cross-course ranking for personnel decisions
- Ask students what would make the course feel relevant
