Six second cycle coding methods

Framework of six second cycle coding methods: pattern, focused, axial, theoretical, elaborative and longitudinal coding.
Second cycle methods work on your codes, not on the raw transcripts Source: Johnny Saldaña, The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers

Six second cycle coding methods described in Johnny Saldaña's coding manual: pattern, focused, axial, theoretical, elaborative and longitudinal coding. Each one takes first cycle codes as its input and condenses them into categories, themes or a theory. Use it to pick the right method for turning a long code list into findings. Koji gives you a first grouping of themes across interviews, with supporting quotes, to review and refine in your own second cycle.

What's in this framework

  1. Pattern coding: Groups first cycle codes into a few explanatory meta-codes: themes, causes, relationships or constructs.
  2. Focused coding: Keeps the most frequent or significant initial codes and uses them to sort the rest.
  3. Axial coding: Relates categories to subcategories and spells out their properties and dimensions.
  4. Theoretical coding: Finds a core category and shows how the other categories relate to it.
  5. Elaborative coding: Works from an existing theory, refining or extending it with new data.
  6. Longitudinal coding: Tracks how things change across data collected over time.
