The four stages cognitive interviews test

Framework of the four stages cognitive interviews test: comprehension, retrieval, judgment and estimation, and response mapping.
A question can break at any of these four points, and each kind of break needs its own fix. Source: CASM (Cognitive Aspects of Survey Methodology)

The four stages a person goes through to answer any survey question, from the CASM model of the survey response process. Use it to plan your cognitive interview probes: ask how people read the question, what they recalled, how they arrived at their answer and whether an option fit. In Koji, the AI interviewer can ask these probes as follow-ups when you pretest a draft survey.

What's in this framework

  1. Comprehension: Do they understand what the question asks and what its key terms mean?
  2. Retrieval: Can they pull the right information from memory to answer it accurately?
  3. Judgment and estimation: Can they weigh up and estimate their answer, and decide what the question covers?
  4. Response mapping: Is there an answer option that matches what they actually want to say?
