Process

The Delphi process, step by step

From a sharp question to a reported consensus

A Delphi study runs in six steps: define the question, select the expert panel, run an open first round, feed back an anonymized summary in round two, repeat until a predefined stopping rule is met, then report the result with any persistent disagreement. Save it as a planning aid for your first panel study.

What's in this process

  1. Define the question: A sharp, answerable problem statement is half the battle.
  2. Select the expert panel: Recruit real expertise and seek diversity of perspective, not just agreement.
  3. Round one: Often open-ended, to surface the full range of considerations.
  4. Round two: Experts see the anonymized summary and re-answer, often with rating scales.
  5. Subsequent rounds: Repeat until the predefined consensus threshold or stopping rule is met.
  6. Synthesize: Report the final position, the level of consensus and any persistent disagreement.
