How to write a UX problem statement in six steps

Process in six steps for writing a UX problem statement: research, findings, insights, drafting the statement, How might we questions and validation.
Most weak problem statements skip step one. Write the statement only after you have talked to users.

A six-step process for writing a UX problem statement that holds up: research with 5 to 8 people, pull out findings, turn them into insights, draft the statement with the POV template, open it up with How might we questions, then validate it with stakeholders and participants. Use it as a checklist for discovery work before ideation starts. Koji can run the discovery interviews in step one with an AI interviewer.

What's in this process

  1. Do the research first: Talk to at least 5 to 8 people who have the problem. Ask why until you reach the root cause.
  2. Extract findings: Write down what specific participants said and did, not what you concluded.
  3. Generate insights: Explain the why behind a pattern of findings.
  4. Write the problem statement: Draft 3 to 5 versions with the POV template. Keep each one user-centered, solution-free, research-backed and specific.
  5. Turn it into HMW questions: Write 3 to 5 How might we questions that come at the same problem from different angles.
  6. Validate it: Ask stakeholders if it's the right problem, and participants if fixing it would matter to them.
