How to run a five-second landing page test

Six steps a founder can finish in a few days

Process of six steps for a five-second landing page test, from picking one image to counting the answers and deciding.
Six steps from one screenshot to a keep, rewrite or rethink decision

A six-step process for testing a landing page before launch. Pick the top of the page, define the people who count, recruit about 15 of them, show the image once for five seconds, ask what they remember and why, then compare the answers with what you hoped to hear. Built for founders with no researcher and no budget for ads yet.

What's in this process

  1. Pick one image: The top of the page on a laptop screen. Add a phone version if most traffic is mobile.
  2. Define who counts: One line, such as practice managers at clinics with 2 to 10 chairs. Screen out everyone else.
  3. Recruit about 15: Start with introductions. Expect to contact far more people than you need.
  4. Show it once for 5 seconds: No explanation first. The image is gone before the questions start.
  5. Ask, then ask why: What do you remember, what is it, who is it for, what next. Then: what made you say that?
  6. Count and decide: Compare answers with what you wrote down first. Keep, rewrite or rethink.
