Checklist

Dyadic interview planning checklist

Checklist for planning a dyadic interview, covering format, recruitment, consent, moderation and analysis.
Run through this before you book the first pair

A nine-point checklist for researchers planning paired or dyadic interviews with couples, families, carers or colleagues. It covers choosing joint or separate formats, recruiting and screening both people, consent, running the session fairly and analysing the pair's interaction. Save it as a prep sheet before fieldwork.

What's in this checklist

  • Mark each research question as joint or separate
  • Recruit pairs who already share a relationship
  • Screen both people for their role
  • Get consent from both, knowing each will hear the other
  • Explain that disagreeing is fine and you want both views
  • If one person always answers first, invite the other directly
  • Leave disagreements open and ask each to say more
  • Never repeat one partner's private answers to the other
  • Code who said what and how the pair built the story
