Five dimensions of implementation fidelity for teaching

Check delivery before you judge a teaching change

A framework for checking whether a teaching change was delivered as designed before judging whether it worked. Based on Dane and Schneider's five dimensions of programme fidelity, adapted for university courses. Teaching teams and quality offices can use it to plan mid-term questions for students and observers. Koji's mid-cycle student interviews can collect the student side of these questions while the course is running.

What's in this framework

  1. Adherence: Did the teaching follow the design? For example, did every seminar group run the planned peer discussion?
  2. Exposure: How much of it students actually got: how many sessions, how long and how often.
  3. Quality of delivery: How well it was run, apart from whether it was run at all.
  4. Student responsiveness: Did students take part? Did they prepare, join the discussion and use the feedback?
  5. Differentiation: Was it really different from what it replaced, or the old course under a new name?
