A checklist for anyone adding pictures, slides or screenshots to course evaluation questions. It draws on web survey experiments showing that images shift answers, by assimilation or contrast, and that clear wording outweighs pictures. Use it to keep images as part of the task and stop them working as hidden cues. In Koji, an image attaches to a single question and carries a description of what it shows.

What's in this checklist

  • The image is the thing being evaluated, not decoration
  • The question names exactly what to judge in the image
  • No photos of the teacher next to questions about teaching
  • The same image is used in every course you compare
  • Question, image and answers fit together on a phone screen
  • Piloted with and without the image before rollout
  • The image has a plain description for screen readers
