Process
Independent first: student feedback before group discussion

A five-step process for running course feedback so that each student's view is captured before social influence can shape it. Experiments on herding, such as Muchnik, Aral and Taylor (2013), found that seeing an early positive rating made later positive ratings more likely. This process puts private answers first and group discussion second. Koji's one-to-one interviews are one way to collect the private step.
What's in this process
- Collect each student's view privately: A survey or one-to-one interview, before students hear each other.
- Hide running results: Students do not see averages or other answers while the evaluation is open.
- Ask about their own experience: Follow up on views that sound borrowed with a question about what happened to them.
- Then discuss in groups: Use focus groups or liaison meetings to explore reasons, not to set the rating.
- Check how themes are built: See whether a theme rests on many separate accounts or a few repeated phrases.
