Interview Protocol Refinement framework: four phases
A way to check an interview guide before the main round of interviews

The Interview Protocol Refinement framework is a four-phase way to prepare an interview guide: align interview questions with research questions, turn them into an inquiry-based conversation, get feedback on the protocol, and pilot it. It was published by Milagros Castillo-Montoya for qualitative researchers and works just as well for product discussion guides. In Koji, the free interview preview is a quick way to run the pilot step.

What's in this process
- Align questions: Map every interview question to the research question it serves. Cut any that serve nothing.
- Build a conversation: Add an opening, transitions between topics, follow-up prompts and a close.
- Get feedback: Have a colleague read it as a participant and flag questions that confuse or lead.
- Pilot it: Run one or two real interviews and check the answers fit your research questions.
