Process
How to run the Sean Ellis test in 6 steps
From picking active users to tracking your score each quarter

A six-step process for running the Sean Ellis test on your own users. Start by choosing an active segment, recruit at least 40 respondents, and ask the four core questions in a conversation rather than a static form. Then segment the very disappointed group, mine the open answers for language and priorities, and re-run the test each quarter. Koji can run the interviews and surface the themes automatically.

What's in this process
- Define your active user segment: Users who finished onboarding and came back at least twice.
- Recruit at least 40 respondents: Aim for 40 to 100 responses so the 40% threshold holds up.
- Use a conversational format: Ask the four core questions, then follow up on each answer.
- Segment the very disappointed group: Look at roles, use cases and how they found the product.
- Mine the open-ended responses: Their words become your headlines, ad copy and roadmap.
- Track the score over time: Re-run it every quarter and compare cohorts.
