Process

Research sequence: interviews, then surveys

Discovery, validation, tracking

Process showing the research sequence of discovery, validation and tracking: interviews first, a survey to validate the themes, then surveys to track results.
Start with interviews so your survey asks the right questions.

A three-step research sequence that uses interviews and surveys in the right order. Start with 8 to 15 interviews to find themes, validate those themes with a survey across your user base, then track progress with ongoing surveys. It prevents the common mistake of launching a survey before you know what to ask.

What's in this process

  1. Interviews first: Explore the problem space with 8 to 15 open-ended interviews. Surface themes and surprises.
  2. Survey to validate: Turn the interview themes into survey questions. Measure how broadly each one applies.
  3. Survey to track: Run ongoing surveys such as an NPS pulse or periodic CSAT to see whether your fixes work.
