Framework
The Laboratory Course Assessment Survey: three scales

The three scales of the Laboratory Course Assessment Survey, a 17 item student survey for course-based undergraduate research experiences. Discovery and relevance and iteration told research courses apart from traditional labs; collaboration did not. Evaluation and quality staff can use it to check whether a course works as a research experience before looking at satisfaction. Koji can pair these items with interview questions about failed experiments.
What's in this framework
- Collaboration: How often students worked with and helped each other. Did not separate research courses from traditional labs.
- Discovery and relevance: Students were expected to produce new findings that could matter beyond the course.
- Iteration: Students revised, repeated or rethought their work in light of their results.
