Process

Lean Canvas fill order: seven steps

Fill the canvas in order of certainty, not top to bottom

Process showing the order to fill a Lean Canvas, from customer segments and problem first to unfair advantage last.

The order Ash Maurya recommends for filling in a Lean Canvas: customer segments and problem first, then value proposition, solution, channels, revenue and costs, key metrics and unfair advantage. It is for founders who tend to jump straight to the solution. Filling in order of certainty forces you to be honest about what you actually know.

Where this appears

What's in this process

  1. Customer segments and problem: Fill these as a pair. A problem needs a person.
  2. Unique value proposition: One sentence. It will be rough at first, and that is fine.
  3. Solution: The smallest version that addresses the problem.
  4. Channels: How the early adopter finds you.
  5. Revenue streams and cost structure: Sanity-check the unit economics.
  6. Key metrics: What proves it is working.
  7. Unfair advantage: For most founders this stays 'not yet' for a long time. Be honest.
