Checklist
Before you move course evaluations online
Eight checks drawn from field experiments on survey mode and absent students

A checklist for quality offices and programme teams moving course evaluations from paper to online, or changing when and where students answer. It follows Treischl and Wolbring's field experiments, which found a clear response-rate gap but only a small ratings difference between modes, and their work showing that absent students change course rankings. Koji evaluations run from a link, so they can be answered in class or afterwards and emailed to the whole cohort with reminders.
What's in this checklist
- Decide separately where students answer and how they answer
- Send the link by email before the session
- Give students time in class to answer on their own device
- Invite every enrolled student, including those who stopped attending
- Keep anonymous and identified collection apart in any comparison
- Report how many students answered next to every result
- Flag the year of the switch so a small dip is not read as worse teaching
- Treat course rankings with more caution than averages
