How to evaluate personal tutoring: four parts

Contact, information, relationship and outcomes, each with its own evidence

Framework for evaluating personal tutoring in four parts: contact, information, relationship and outcomes, each with the evidence to collect.
Each part needs its own evidence, so a high score on one cannot hide a gap in another. Source: Koji synthesis, after the UKAT Professional Framework for Advising and Tutoring

A four-part framework for evaluating personal tutoring and academic advising in a university department: contact, information, relationship and outcomes. It is for directors of student experience, programme leads and quality teams who want more than a meeting count. Report the parts separately and evaluate the tutoring system before individual tutors. Koji can interview students about real advice episodes with personal details removed from transcripts.

What's in this framework

  1. Contact: Did meetings happen, how often, and who never came? Check records against what students report.
  2. Information: Did students get a correct, useful answer to their last real question about rules, choices or services?
  3. Relationship: Would the student take a real problem to their tutor? If not, find out why.
  4. Outcomes: Referrals made and taken up, continuation, and how sure students feel about their next step.
