Process

Five steps to rank customer problems

From stories to a top-three pick you can trust

Process of five steps to rank customer problems: hear stories, write the list, shuffle and pick three, ask why, and check what people did about it.
Stories first, then the shuffled pick, then the proof.

A five-step process for founders who have heard several customer pains and must choose one to build for. It starts with open stories, turns them into a short list, asks 15 to 30 people to pick their top three in a shuffled order, asks why, and checks for real workarounds. Use it before you write any code.

What's in this process

  1. Hear 8 to 12 stories: Ask about the last time the problem happened, not about your idea.
  2. Write the list: 5 to 8 pains in the customer's words, plus Something else at the end.
  3. Shuffle and pick three: 15 to 30 people, a new order for each, exactly three picks.
  4. Ask why: For each pick: what happened, what it cost, who else was there.
  5. Check what they did: A pain with no workaround and no money spent is a mild annoyance.
