Framework

The team-of-one research operating model

Framework for a solo researcher with four parts: triage requests on decision value, templatize repeat studies, delegate shallow work and automate interviews.
One researcher can't run every study. This is how the work gets produced anyway.

An operating model for a research team of one, the single researcher supporting a whole product organization. It has four parts: triage requests on the decision they change, reuse one study design per recurring request, set which methods others may run on their own, and hand off moderation and transcription while keeping the judgment. Koji's AI-moderated interviews cover the automation part.

What's in this framework

  1. Triage on decision value: Ask what decision a request changes and what being wrong costs. No decision, no study. Publish the rule.
  2. Templatize the repeatable: Give each recurring request, like churn or a failing flow, one study design you reuse, plus a question bank.
  3. Delegate the shallow: Set which methods others may run alone, which need your review, and which stay yours.
  4. Automate the interviews: Hand off scheduling, moderating and transcribing. Keep the judgment about what to study and what it means.
