Why students who trust course evaluations rate higher

Three ways to read the finding that students with more positive views of the evaluation process give slightly higher course evaluation scores, as reported by Spooren and Christiaens (2017) and a replication in Ecuador. It is meant for quality officers and evaluation leads who compare scores across courses or departments. Each explanation comes with a practical check. Koji's interview-based course evaluations ask students for the reasons behind each rating, which helps tell these explanations apart.
What's in this framework
- Trust makes students more generous: Students who believe evaluation leads to change rate a little higher. Fix: read scores next to a trust item.
- Good courses build trust: A course that went well makes evaluation feel worthwhile. Fix: compare the same course over time, not across units.
- A general positive outlook: Some students agree with most statements, about teaching or the process. Fix: ask for reasons behind each rating.
