Survey question order: a 7-step template

Process showing a seven-step survey question order: screener, behavioral anchor, scale, adaptive probe, ranking, demographics and an optional open question.
Anchor on behavior, quantify it, probe it, then prioritize. The order keeps fatigue down.

A seven-step template for ordering survey or interview questions so fatigue and drop-off stay low: a screener, a behavioral anchor question, a scale to quantify the experience, an open probe into the reason, a ranking to prioritize, demographics at the end and a final optional open question. It suits researchers and product teams drafting a new study. In Koji the AI can add that probe on its own after a low score.

What's in this process

  1. Screener: Yes or no, or single choice: is this the person you need to hear from?
  2. Behavioral anchor: Open-ended: tell me about the last time you did it.
  3. Closed quantification: A scale or Likert question: how easy was that to do?
  4. Adaptive probe: Open-ended: what made it hard, or what made it easy?
  5. Prioritization: Ranking: put these 4 improvements in order of value.
  6. Demographics, at the end: Single choice for role, company size and similar.
  7. Optional open-ended: Anything else we should know?
