Framework

The three basic dimensions of teaching quality

Framework of the three basic dimensions of teaching quality: classroom management, student support and cognitive activation, each with a sample question.
Check that your course evaluation asks about all three, not only organisation and support Source: Praetorius, Klieme, Herbert and Pinger (2018), ZDM

The Three Basic Dimensions model of teaching quality from German-speaking research, as reviewed by Praetorius, Klieme, Herbert and Pinger (2018): classroom management, student support and cognitive activation. Each dimension has a sample course evaluation question adapted for university teaching. Use it to check whether your questionnaire covers all three. Koji for Education lets teams write these questions into a conversational course evaluation.

What's in this framework

  1. Classroom management: Structure and good use of time. Ask: were sessions well organised?
  2. Student support: A safe, helpful climate. Ask: could you ask questions or make mistakes?
  3. Cognitive activation: Challenge to think deeply. Ask: did the tasks make you think hard?
