Wrong audience or wrong first session?

Three questions to ask after your first ten signup interviews

Flowchart for low activation: three questions that lead to fixing who you attract, rewriting the first screen or removing a blocking step.
Work through it after the first ten calls

A decision path for founders whose signups do not reach first value. After ten interviews, it asks whether the people wanted what you built, whether they could tell what to do first, and whether a step asked for something they lacked. Each answer ends in one action, so you change one thing and re-test. It follows the playbook on interviewing your first signups.

What's in this flowchart

Start: Signups are not activating

  1. Did they sign up for the job you built this for?
    • Yes: go to 2.
    • No: Fix who you attract. Change the page, channel or promise before onboarding.
  2. Can they say what to do first?
    • Yes: go to 3.
    • No: Rewrite the first screen. Test it with a ten-second timed view. Then go to 3.
  3. Did a step ask for something they lacked?
    • No: go to 4.
    • Yes: Defer or remove that step. Data, a teammate or a card can wait.
  4. Fix the biggest blocker. Change one thing, not five.
  5. Finish: Re-run the same questions on ten signups.
