Block vs semester units in course evaluation

Comparison of block and semester delivery in course evaluation: what changes for timing, number of requests and what students rate.
Block units need their own evaluation plan, not the semester one. Source: Loton, Stein, Parker and Weaven (2022), Studies in Higher Education

A comparison for programme directors and quality staff planning course evaluation in block or intensive teaching. Loton, Stein, Parker and Weaven (2022) found that the block model at Victoria University raised performance substantially while satisfaction changed little, with teaching satisfaction up and course satisfaction down. Block units need different timing, shorter evaluations and separate questions on teaching and unit design. Koji supports short interview-based evaluations for each unit.

What's in this comparison

Semester units

  • Evaluation can run in the last weeks with time to spare
  • About four units a year, so fewer requests
  • Students rate twelve weeks of experience
  • A single overall score can hide what changed

Block units

  • The last week is often assessment, so pick a fixed point
  • Up to eight units a year, so keep evaluations short
  • Students rate a few intensive weeks
  • Ask about teaching and unit design separately
