The six phases of thematic analysis

Braun and Clarke's process, from raw transcripts to a finished report

Process showing the six phases of thematic analysis, from familiarizing with the data and coding to naming themes and writing the report.
Move back and forth between phases as your understanding grows. They are sequential, not strictly linear. Source: Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke, 2006

The six phases of thematic analysis as set out by Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke in 2006. It runs from reading your transcripts closely, through coding and theme building, to writing the report. Use it as a checklist when you analyze interviews, focus groups or open-ended survey answers. Koji's AI can draft initial codes and theme suggestions that you review and refine.

What's in this process

  1. Familiarize with the data: Read and re-read every transcript. Note what stands out before you code anything.
  2. Generate initial codes: Label meaningful segments of text and keep a codebook that defines each code.
  3. Search for themes: Group related codes into candidate themes, patterns with a point.
  4. Review themes: Check each theme against its coded extracts, then against the full dataset.
  5. Define and name themes: Write a definition for each theme and give it a specific, memorable name.
  6. Produce the report: Tell an evidence-based story that answers your research questions.
