The DEAL model for critical reflection

Process showing the DEAL model for critical reflection in service-learning: describe the experience, examine it against learning goals, articulate the learning.
Structured reflection is where service turns into learning Source: Ash and Clayton, Journal of Applied Learning in Higher Education, 2009

The DEAL model from Ash and Clayton sets out three steps for critical reflection in service-learning and other applied learning. Course teams can use it to structure reflection assignments, and evaluation staff can use the written products as direct evidence of learning, scored against the course goals. Koji can follow the same three steps in an interview with students after a placement.

What's in this process

  1. Describe: What happened, who was involved and what you did, stated plainly.
  2. Examine: Look at the experience against the course's academic, civic or personal learning goals.
  3. Articulate learning: What you learned, why it matters and what you will do with it.
