Five building blocks of evaluation capacity in a university

What it takes for course evaluation results to change teaching

Framework showing five building blocks of evaluation capacity in a university, from leadership that asks about use to keeping development apart from appraisal.
Better data only changes teaching when these five are in place.

A framework for university quality offices and educational developers that sets out what it takes for course evaluation results to change teaching. It adapts Preskill and Boyle's model of evaluation capacity building to higher education: leadership, people, usable evidence, routines and culture. Use it to check where your institution invests and where it does not. Koji helps with the usable evidence block through mid-cycle student interviews.

What's in this framework

  1. Leadership that asks about use: Deans and programme leads ask what changed because of feedback, not just what the score was.
  2. Time and people to make sense of it: Educational developers or trained peers help staff read results and plan changes.
  3. Evidence people can act on: Specific, timely feedback collected mid-cycle, not a mean that arrives after the course ends.
  4. Routines that close the gap: A standing slot in programme meetings to review feedback and record decisions.
  5. Development kept apart from appraisal: Feedback used to improve teaching is kept separate from feedback used to judge staff.
