Process

How to find your first customer segment

Five steps from a list of guesses to one group to build for

Process showing five steps to find a first customer segment: list segments, recruit five each, ask the same questions, score three signals, pick one.
Compare segments side by side before you pick one to build for

A five-step process for founders without customers who need to choose which group to build for first. It compares three or four candidate segments with a few interviews each, using the same questions, then scores them on whether people describe a recent episode, pay for a workaround and can be reached. It ends with a longer round of interviews in the winning group. Koji can run the interviews and keep each answer next to its quote.

What's in this process

  1. List 3 or 4 segments: Name groups by who they are and what they do, not by industry size.
  2. Recruit 5 per segment: Screen so each person really is in the group you named.
  3. Ask the same questions: Same order, same wording, so the answers can be compared.
  4. Score three signals: Recent episode, a workaround they pay for, and how reachable they are.
  5. Pick one and go deeper: Run 15 to 20 more interviews with that group before you build.
