How to research good-better-best pricing tiers

Process for researching good-better-best pricing tiers in six steps, from finding segments to testing the full lineup and validating with behaviour
Research the features, the prices and the lineup as three separate questions

A six-step process for researching tiered pricing before you launch it: find the segments, rank features by value, draft the lineup, price each tier, test the full lineup with separate groups and validate the winner with real behaviour. It is for founders and product teams designing or changing a good-better-best plan structure. Koji can run each step as an AI-moderated interview with choice, ranking and price test questions.

What's in this process

  1. Find the segments: Tiers should map to real differences between customers, such as team size, usage or what is at stake.
  2. Rank the features by value: Use ranking or MaxDiff to sort table stakes, differentiators and nice-to-haves.
  3. Draft the lineup: Put table stakes in every tier and use differentiators as the boundaries. Name each tier for who it serves.
  4. Price each tier: Run a Gabor-Granger or Van Westendorp test with the segment each tier is for, and ask why after each answer.
  5. Test the full lineup: Show the tiers side by side and ask which one people would choose. Test variants with separate groups.
  6. Validate with behaviour: Check the winner with a pricing page test, a pre-order or a phased rollout before you commit.
