Goals, signals, metrics (GSM) is the three-step exercise that goes with the HEART framework. For each HEART category you pick, write the user goal first, list the signals that would show it, then choose one or two numbers to track. It turns a checklist of categories into a measurement plan, and every metric should carry a numeric target.

What's in this process

  1. Goals: Write one sentence on what success looks like for the user, not the business.
  2. Signals: List the behaviors or stated attitudes that show the goal is met or missed.
  3. Metrics: Choose the precise number to track over time for each signal.
