Importance-performance analysis matrix

Matrix of importance against performance showing the four IPA quadrants: Concentrate here, Keep up the good work, Low priority, Possible overkill.

The importance-performance analysis (IPA) matrix plots each attribute by how much customers care about it and how well you deliver. The axes cross at the average importance and average performance, not the scale midpoint. Read it to decide what to fix first, what to protect and where to free up effort. Koji's AI interviews collect both ratings and the reasons behind them.

Where this appears

What's in this matrix

Vertical axis: Importance (Low to High). Horizontal axis: Performance (Low to High).

  • Concentrate here (High importance, Low performance): High importance, low performance. Your fix-first list.
  • Keep up the good work (High importance, High performance): High importance, high performance. Protect these strengths.
  • Low priority (Low importance, Low performance): Low importance, low performance. The return on effort is small.
  • Possible overkill (Low importance, High performance): Low importance, high performance. Move effort elsewhere.
