In-depth interview guide: five parts

Process showing the five parts of an in-depth interview guide: opening, warm-up, core exploration, concept review and closing, with timings.
Give the core exploration the most time, and cut the concept review when you have nothing to show.

A five-part structure for an in-depth interview guide, with a suggested time for each part. It runs from a short opening and consent through a warm-up, the core questions, an optional concept review and a close. Use it to plan a 45 to 90 minute one-on-one interview so the core exploration gets most of the time. It suits customer discovery, UX research and market research interviews.

What's in this process

  1. Opening: 2 to 3 min. Introduce the purpose, get consent, and say there are no right or wrong answers.
  2. Warm-up: 5 to 10 min. Easy questions about background and context to build rapport.
  3. Core exploration: 25 to 40 min. Open questions, recent incidents and probes on your main research questions.
  4. Concept review: 10 to 15 min, if needed. Show a prototype or example and ask for reactions.
  5. Closing: 5 min. Ask what else the participant thinks you should know, then thank them.
