Framework
Where interviewer effects enter course feedback
Five points where the person asking shapes what students say

A framework for quality and evaluation leads who run focus groups, student panels or interviews for course feedback. It splits the interviewer effect into five entry points, from who asks to how answers are recorded, so each can be checked and fixed on its own. It draws on the survey methodology literature on interviewer effects. Koji standardises the questions and follow-up rules in AI-moderated interviews and keeps full transcripts for audit.
What's in this framework
- Who asks: Status, gender, age and the relationship to the student change what feels safe to say.
- How the question is worded: Facilitators paraphrase, and paraphrases drift from one session to the next.
- Which answers get probed: People follow up on what interests them. Quiet students and surprising answers get less depth.
- Who else is present: In a group, the first confident voice sets the frame and dissent costs more.
- How answers are recorded: Notes taken in the room are already a summary. Two note-takers give two datasets.
