Checklist
Open-ended course evaluation questions: a checklist

A seven-point checklist for quality teams who want fuller, more specific answers to the open questions in course evaluations. It draws on web survey experiments on instructions, answer box size, mobile completion and follow-up probing. Use it to review a questionnaire before the next round. Koji applies the same ideas in AI-moderated interviews, with follow-ups set per question.
What's in this checklist
- Swap the generic catch-all for one or two specific prompts
- Say in one sentence that detail helps and answers can run long
- Use a modest answer box, not a single line or a full page
- Design for phones first, where answers tend to be shorter
- Follow up on a few key questions only, not every answer
- Make each follow-up about what the student actually said
- Report how many students commented next to the comments
