Mom Test interview structure in five parts

A customer discovery interview from opening to the ask

Process showing a Mom Test customer interview in five parts with timings: opening context, current behavior, past attempts, spending and priority, and the ask.
Use this running order to keep a discovery interview on past behavior.

A five-part running order for a customer discovery interview that follows the Mom Test rules. It starts with the customer's context, moves through current behavior and past attempts, checks spending and priority, and ends with three asks. Each part has a suggested time, so the full conversation runs about 30 to 50 minutes. Founders and product managers can use it as a script outline for manual or AI-moderated interviews.

What's in this process

  1. Opening: their context: 5 to 10 minutes. Their role, a typical week and the challenges they face.
  2. Current behavior: 10 to 15 minutes. How they handle the problem today, what it costs and what breaks.
  3. Past attempts: 5 to 10 minutes. What they tried before and why they gave it up.
  4. Spending and priority: 5 to 10 minutes. What they spend now and where this ranks against other priorities.
  5. The ask: 5 minutes. Ask for an introduction, a follow-up and a commitment signal.
