Process

Five steps to research a new country

About three weeks, before any translation work starts

Process of five steps to research a new country before translating: pick, define, recruit, interview, then compare and decide.
Five steps, about three weeks, and no translation until step five is done.

A five-step process a founder or product lead can follow to test a new country before spending on translation or a local hire. It covers choosing the market, defining the buyer, recruiting native speakers from several routes, interviewing in their language with an identical script, and comparing the results with the home market to decide. Drawn from the Koji founder playbook on new countries.

What's in this process

  1. Pick one country: Choose by evidence you hold: inbound leads, strong local ingredients. Three at most.
  2. Define the person: Copy your best home customers into three or four screening questions.
  3. Recruit natives: Mix inbound leads, introductions and a panel so you do not only hear fans.
  4. Interview in their language: Same questions, same order, about 12 conversations per country.
  5. Compare and decide: Tally against home, then write the go, adapt or wait call.
