Framework
Five dimensions for evaluating a PBL tutor

The five dimensions that Dolmans and colleagues at Maastricht University used to build a questionnaire for tutors who guide problem-based learning groups. Use it to write tutor evaluation items that match what a PBL tutor is asked to do, and keep course design questions separate. The original study found the instrument fairly valid and reliable with about six student responses per tutor. Koji can run these items as a short interview with a follow-up on each rating.
What's in this framework
- Constructive learning: Helps students activate what they already know and build on it.
- Self-directed learning: Encourages students to set their own learning goals and own them.
- Contextual learning: Helps students link the problem to practice and apply what they learn.
- Collaborative learning: Helps the group work together and give each other feedback.
- Interpersonal behaviour: Is approachable and engaged with the group.
