Process
From student ratings to a quality conversation
A six-step process for turning course evaluation results into teaching enhancement

A six-step process for quality offices and academic developers who want course evaluation results to lead to better teaching. It follows Roxå and colleagues' argument that student ratings support enhancement only when they feed reflective conversations informed by teaching and learning research, and Roxå and Mårtensson's finding that teachers talk about teaching mostly with a few trusted colleagues. Koji can supply the reasons and themes behind the scores for that conversation.
What's in this process
- Collect ratings with reasons: Ask for scores and the reasons behind them, so the talk starts from what students meant.
- Let the teacher read first: A few days alone with the results before anyone else sees them.
- Talk it through with a trusted colleague: A private, honest conversation with a colleague or academic developer the teacher trusts.
- Bring students into the conversation: Course representatives help explain what the cohort meant and what would help.
- Read the results against research: Use what is known about teaching and learning to explain the pattern, not just the score.
- Agree changes and report back: Write down what will change and tell the next cohort what their feedback led to.
