Checklist
Six rules for unbiased focus group questions

A checklist for writing focus group questions that do not lead or load the answer. Check each question for open-endedness, one idea at a time, neutral wording, participants' own language and a focus on real past behavior, then place the key questions mid-session when energy peaks. Use it before you finalize any discussion guide, live or AI-moderated.

What's in this checklist
- Keep questions open-ended: ask what they thought, not whether they liked it
- Ask one thing at a time and split double-barreled questions
- Stay neutral: don't presume frustration or delight in the wording
- Use your participants' words, not your internal product names
- Ask about specific past behavior, not hypotheticals
- Put your most important key questions in the middle of the session
