Which customers to interview first

Choosing the first cohort from your own customer list

Flowchart for choosing which customers to interview first: two questions, one side step, ending with a side-by-side comparison of the cohorts.
Start with the people most likely to miss you, then widen.

A short decision path for a founder with a customer list and a product-market fit doubt. Start with the power users, check whether the share who would be very disappointed is under the 40 percent rule of thumb, then add recent signups or quiet accounts and compare the cohorts side by side.

What's in this flowchart

Start: You have a customer list

  1. Do you know who your power users are?
    • Yes: go to 2.
    • No: Rank accounts by usage. Take the top ten percent. Then go to 2.
  2. Interview the power users. Ask what they would lose and what they used before.
  3. Is the very disappointed share under 40%?
    • Yes: go to 4.
    • No: Check recent signups next. See if new users reach the same value.
  4. Add the quiet accounts. Paid but little usage: what did they hope for?
  5. Finish: Compare the cohorts side by side.
