Short answer: Qualaroo is good at one thing: a small "Nudge" that asks a visitor one or two questions on a page or in an app. Which alternative fits depends on what you want next. For one survey tool across website, app and email, pick Survicate. To see answers next to heatmaps and recordings, pick Hotjar. For in-product surveys in a large product org, look at Sprig or Pendo. For SaaS feedback tied to accounts, Refiner. For surveys inside onboarding flows, Userpilot. And if the problem is that a one-line answer never tells you why, use Koji. It puts an AI-moderated voice or text interview where the survey would have gone, asks follow-up questions and writes the report.

Why teams look past Qualaroo

Micro-surveys work because they catch people in context. Refiner looked at 1,382 in-app surveys in its 2025 response rate report and found an average response rate of 27.52%, rising to 36.14% in mobile apps. Format matters as much as placement, though. SurveyMonkey's response rate benchmarks put in-app surveys sent through its mobile SDK at 34.37% on average and popup surveys at just 3.65%. A prompt that interrupts the page gets ignored.

Open text has its own problem. Pew Research Center found that open-ended questions on its online panel go unanswered about 18% of the time on average, against 1% to 2% for closed questions, because typing an answer is more work than clicking one. So a Nudge that asks "What stopped you today?" collects plenty of ratings and a thinner pile of short comments. Nobody gets to ask the follow-up question.

That is usually why teams start comparing tools. Some want more channels or better analytics around the same kind of survey. Others realise the survey was never going to tell them why, and want a conversation instead.

What Qualaroo offers

Qualaroo is a contextual survey tool built around Nudges: small, non-modal prompts on websites and in apps, targeted by URL, behaviour or user attributes. It offers branching logic, exit-intent surveys and sentiment analysis of open-text answers, which review sites describe as running on IBM Watson.

We couldn't check Qualaroo's own pricing page for this article, so treat these figures as a starting point. Capterra lists a free version, an Essentials plan at $19.99 a month, Business at $49.99 a month and an Enterprise tier from $149.99, with annual billing on the top plan. Other review sites report a free tier of about 50 responses a month. Confirm current prices with Qualaroo before you budget.

1. Koji: for the reason behind every answer

Koji replaces the micro-survey with a short interview. You write the research question, Koji drafts the brief, and an AI interviewer talks to each participant by text or voice, asking follow-up questions when an answer is vague. A user who says checkout was "confusing" gets asked what they expected to happen, and what they did instead.

You keep the structured data too. A study can mix six question types (open-ended, scale, single choice, multiple choice, ranking and yes/no), so the NPS or CSAT score you used to collect with a Nudge is still there, with the conversation attached to it. When interviews come in, Koji groups the answers into themes, links every finding to the quotes behind it and writes a report you can share.

To ask people inside your product, embed the interview with an iframe on any plan, including Free. You can set a light or dark theme, pass your own user ID so answers match your records, and listen for events when an interview starts and finishes. There's a React wrapper, and on the Interviews and Enterprise plans a headless API if you want to build your own interface. In-app AI interviews covers the set-up, and if you already have Nudges, this guide converts a Qualaroo Nudge into an interview.

Koji doesn't do one thing Qualaroo does: it has no targeting engine that decides which visitor sees a prompt. You place the embed or share the link where you want it. In exchange it reaches people a Nudge can't, such as churned customers on an email list, prospects, or participants recruited from Koji's research panel on paid plans.

Pricing is published. A text interview uses 1 credit and a voice interview 3 credits, and only interviews that score 3 or more out of 5 for quality use credits (how the quality gate works). You start with 10 free credits. Insights costs €29 a month with 29 credits, and Interviews costs €79 a month with 79 credits and adds voice interviews. See the plan comparison for the details.

2. Survicate: one survey across every channel

Survicate runs the same survey on your website, inside web and mobile apps, by email and as a shareable link, which makes it the closest like-for-like swap for Qualaroo if you want more channels. Review sites consistently list a free plan with 25 responses a month and one active survey. Paid plans are priced by monthly response volume, so the bill grows with your traffic. Its AI summaries help with open text, but the answers are still whatever people typed into a box.

3. Hotjar: answers next to heatmaps and recordings

Hotjar pairs on-site surveys and feedback widgets with heatmaps and session recordings, so you can watch what a user did before they answered. Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare, and its pricing page points to Contentsquare's, where surveys sit under a Voice of Customer product. Existing customers are being moved over account by account, so check what your account will pay. It's a strong fit for website and marketing teams. It's less suited to analysing open text in depth.

4. Sprig: in-product surveys for larger teams

Sprig triggers surveys from product events and adds AI analysis, replays and heatmaps. Pricing is based on tracked users rather than responses. In August 2026 PricingSaaS recorded that Sprig had removed its self-serve Free and Starter plans from its pricing page, leaving a demo request for Enterprise. If you need a self-serve tool, that rules it out. If you have a budget and a product analytics stack, it's a capable choice.

5. Refiner: SaaS feedback tied to accounts

Refiner focuses on SaaS companies, with in-app surveys for web and mobile, email surveys and segmentation by user and account data. Capterra and GetApp list it from $99 a month, usage-based, with a free trial. It's a good pick when you want NPS and CSAT broken down by plan or account. Like Qualaroo, it collects answers but doesn't follow up on them.

6. Userpilot: surveys inside onboarding

Userpilot is an onboarding and adoption platform first. Its own pricing guide lists Starter at $299 a month, billed annually, for up to 2,000 monthly active users, with in-app NPS surveys. Other survey types arrive on Growth, from $849 a month. Choose it if surveys are one part of a wider onboarding project. It's a lot of tool if all you want is questions.

7. Pendo: polls inside a product analytics suite

Pendo combines product analytics, in-app guides, polls and NPS. Its free tier covers up to 500 monthly active users, with Pendo branding on guides and surveys. Paid plans are quoted through sales and Pendo doesn't publish list prices. It makes sense when your team already runs on Pendo analytics. As a stand-alone Qualaroo replacement, it's heavy.

Survey or interview: what do you actually need?

Most of these tools improve on Qualaroo in reach, targeting or analytics. They don't change the format: a short question and a short answer. That's the right format when you want to measure something, such as whether a new page confuses people or whether satisfaction moved after a release.

It's the wrong format when the team keeps asking "but why?" after reading the results. If an 18% skip rate on open questions and one-line comments are what you're working with, a better survey tool won't fix it.

A practical set-up is to keep a lightweight survey for the metric and run interviews on the questions that matter. When a score drops, send the people behind it an interview link instead of another survey. Our guide to AI interviews vs surveys goes deeper on when each one fits.

How to choose

  • You want Qualaroo with more channels: Survicate.
  • You want to watch behaviour next to answers: Hotjar.
  • You have an enterprise product analytics budget: Sprig or Pendo.
  • You want feedback split by account in a SaaS product: Refiner.
  • Surveys are part of onboarding: Userpilot.
  • You want to know why, not only what: Koji.

Before you sign, check how each vendor counts usage (responses, pageviews or monthly tracked users) and what happens when you go over. That's usually where the price changes.

Try Koji

If your Qualaroo results keep raising questions the next survey can't answer, run one study as an interview instead. Create a free Koji account, describe what you want to learn, and embed the interview where your Nudge used to be, or send the link to the people behind your lowest scores. You get 10 free credits to start, and only interviews that clear the quality bar use them.
